The Story of Rizo Loco
Hi, my name is Jo.I'm the hairdresser behind Rizo Loco. I've been hairdressing since 2008 and, over the years, I've seen many friends come and go from the industry.
Personally, I couldn't imagine doing anything else. I genuinely love what I do and have been fortunate to build a career being creative and helping people feel confident in themselves.
When I first started hairdressing, the industry relied heavily on chemicals, from shampoos and colour services to most of the products used throughout the day.
After years of constant exposure, I decided in 2015 to take my career in a different direction. I remained in the profession and industry, I loved, but shifted my focus away from chemical-based services and towards curly hair education and care. I began learning curl specific methods and helping people embrace and understand their natural hair and texture.
This approach aligned with both my personal values and my vision for a healthier, more sustainable way of working .After spending two years in a successful Melbourne salon, I took the leap and opened my own salon.
Along the way, talented skilled and wonderful hairdressers joined me and the journey and helped shape the salon into one of the most rewarding workplaces I have ever been a part of.
From the beginning, I made a commitment to support Australian-made products and became a member of Sustainable Salons Australia, ensuring the business reflected the values that were important to me.
Like many small businesses, the salon faced significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a relatively new business, the impact was considerable and, after careful consideration, I made the difficult decision to close the salon in 2022.
The years that followed brought a number of personal challenges and required me to step away from my career for a time.
By late 2024, I was ready to return, and I leased a shop in Ascot Vale with the goal of rebuilding both my business and my passion for the industry.
I am restarting that journey and bringing Rizo Loco back to life.
Every day I feel more like myself again, and I'm excited to reconnect with the curly-haired community that has always inspired me.
I'm incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported me along the way, and I look forward to welcoming both new and returning clients as this next chapter begins.
Thank you to all who have kept me going.
Jo
